Cargo ship crashed into passenger m/v

In the morning of March 28, 2017, the "Jan Caribe" was in collision with the passenger vessel "Capitan D" on the Escondido River in Nicaragua, approximately 25 miles east of El Rama. The "Jan Caribe" was headed to El Rama from El Bluff when it approached the "Capitan D" which had departed from El Rama bound for the Bluefields. All 40 persons on board, 29 passengers and 11 crew amembers of the "Captain D" were rescued. The "Capitan D" sustained severe damage and uncontrolled water ingress. Both vessels proceeded to the nearby river bank. Some on board the "Capitan D" had to jump into the river and swim ashore. Everyone was able to safely abandon ship and make it ashore safely. Authorities were alerted and dispatched two rescue vessels to the scene to assist in rescue efforts. No reports of injuries. The ship sank a few hours after the crash.
