One of two barges refloated

Thu Jun 28 11:19:29 CEST 2018 Timsen

In the evening of June 27 the "Kiesfracht", 1717 ts (EU-No.: 04604990), which had run aground on the Danube in the afternoon of June 22 at 5 p.m. at river km 2306 near Bogen in the Pfelling area, could be refloated, after the Hungarian barge "Herso 1" (MMSI: 243070815) lightered part of the cargo. Both ships entered the port of Straubing after the successful operation. The "Kiesfracht" was now being surveyed for damages. The Slovakian flagged, self propelled barge "Plochingen", 1446 ts (EU-No.: 04001480), remained aground for the time being, but did not hamper ship traffic as it was stuck outside the fairway. Before ship traffic could be resumed on the Danube, the gravel bars which had built up during the salvage attempts first had to be removed. The work was expected to be completed in the run of June 28. Salvage has started

Wed Jun 27 11:06:51 CEST 2018 Timsen

On June 27 the salvage of the "Kiesfracht", 1717 ts (EU-No.: 04604990), which had run aground on the Danube in the afternoon of June 22 at 5 p.m. at river km 2306 near Bogen in the Pfelling area, and the "Plochingen", 1446 ts (EU-No.: 04001480), has commenced. The removal of the "Kiesfracht" had priority as she was blocking the fairway. First a part of the 1.050 tons wheat on board have to be lightered onto another barge, the Hungarian "Herso 1“ (MMSI-No.: 243070815). Then the ship is to be pulled off and immediately after the removal the fairway will have to be dredged. Gravel had built up during the failed salvage attempts by the "Plochingen", the salvage of which was not as urgent as she was stuck outside the fairway. If everything went according to plan, ship traffic may be resumed in the afternoon of June 27. Grounding on the Danube

Mon Jun 25 10:02:15 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "Kiesfracht", 1717 ts (EU-No.: 04604990), ran aground on the Danube in the afternoon of June 22, 2018, at 5 p.m. at river km 2306 near Bogen in the Pfelling area. The ship drifted perpendicular to the fairway. Short time later also the "Plochingen", 1446 ts (EU-No.: 04001480), got stuck 800 meters downstream during attempts to get the "Kiesfracht" off. The river was completely barred for shipping at the grounding site. The barges were loaded with 950 reps. 1.050 tons wheat which will have to be lightered before they can be refloated. Also the fairway will have to be dredged. The chapter Deggendorf of the water and shipping authority Regensburg tasked the water police Deggendorf with investigations and was working on a strategy to get ship traffic running again as soon as possible. Salvage work was due to start in the morning of June 25 and was expected to take two to three days. About 30 ships were affected by the accident and could not continue their voyages.
