Captured crew members released

Nine Georgian crew members of the 'Vemahope' who were kidnapped by pirates on Apr 30, were on their way home after having been released. Aditional crew members, including four Georgians, had remained safely on the tanker at the time of the incident. The nine abducted sailors have been freed after 21 days of captivity and were reported to be in good health receiving routine medical treatment in Nigeria. Arrangements were being made for a special flight to return the sailors to Georgia.

Tanker attacked off Lagos

The 'Vemahope' was attacked by pirates on April 30, 2020, at 7.30 pm. in the Gulf of Guinea, about 175 miles south of Lagos. The ship wasen route from Lome to Cameroon at that time. The pirates managed to board the tanker and kidnap 10 crew members. The tanker went adrift in northern direction. The Nigeria-flagged fast support offshore boat 'SVS Avery' was approaching it on May 1.
