Crane barge allided with bridge

Mon Oct 15 22:03:27 CEST 2018 Timsen

On Oct 12, 2018, at 2 a.m. a crane barge towed by the "Kristine Alexis" allided with the Sunshine Bridge at Donaldsonville and severely damaged a load-bearing beam on the bridge, closing the span indefinitely. Louisiana highway officials closed the major route over the Mississippi River after the incident, delaying school start times and diverting thousands of drivers to alternate routes. Marquette Transportation was actively working with the Coast Guard and the LA DOT to complete the investigation and assess the damage to the bridge and required repairs. The crane atop the barge was in an upright position when it hit the bridge. A horizontal beam of the bridge was crumpled. Louisiana State Police reported the crash just before 3 a.m., and the state Department of Transportation and Development identified a contractor to work on the bridge and was trying to reopen it as quickly as possible.

Five saved after tug capsized

Fri Oct 25 09:06:07 CEST 2013 Timsen

The New Orleans Fire Department, Harbor Police, and the Coast Guard responded to the capsizing of the "Kristin Alexis" on the lower Mississippi River at mile 98 around 9:30 a.m. on Oct 23, 2013, adjacent to the Louisiana Avenue Wharf. The tug got caught up in a large wake caused by a passing ship and flipped over, sending the crew of five into the water. All were rescued by a passing tug and taken to the Harbor Police station. The "Kristin Alexis" was completely submerged. The Coast Guard conducted a pollution assessment to determine if there were any environmental impacts. The river was not closed to other river traffic as the werck was outside the navigable channel, but an urgent marine warning was issued to notify other vessels of the sunken tug. An oil spill removal organization deployed boom and sorbent materials to mitigate any environmental impacts. A salvage company was on scene to ensure the vessel remained secure overnight.
