Overloaded barge grounded on the Rhine

Sun Dec 15 12:42:09 CET 2019 Timsen

Coming from Rotterdam, the 'Roman', 3072 ts (EU-Bo.: 02327616), along with the pushed barge 'Roman II', 2622 ts (EU-No.: 02328194), coming from Rotterdam with a cargo of coal, ran aground on the Rhine at Trechtingshausen in the Mainz-Bingen municipality, in the morning of Dec 14, 2019. The master stated that he had to avoid an aaproaching ship. The police, however, found out that the ship was overloaded by 350 tons. A dredger and a lighter ship were called to refloat the ships which succeeded in the run of the day. During the salvage work the Rhine was closed for passing ship traffic for one hour. After the ships had reached Bingen, traffic was resumed again. The ships berthed in Karlsruhe on Dec 15 at 8.30 p.m. The police had launched an investigation against the master.
