Irish Law Enforcement intelligence officers played a major role in the seizure
Irish Law Enforcement intelligence officers have played a major role in the seizure of €400m worth of drugs off the coast of Spain aboard the 'Natailia'. The Irish officers, working with the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre Narcotics in the Portuguese city of Lisbon played an instrumental role in the seizure on Aug 8. They found the 20 tonnes of hashish inside the cargo hold of the vessel. The Irish agents were involved in generating the information that led to the seizure. The focus of the investigation was centred around an “international organised crime group”. It was believed that the smuggling operation had connections to Middle East and North Africa. Irish, Spanish and French law enforcement elements, including anti terror officers, were involved in the operation which began investigations in January. The intelligence officers determined that the smugglers involved had a previous involvement in alleged international smuggling with a 13 tonne seizure of drugs in North Africa. The international operation stretched from the Eastern reaches of the Mediterranean to the coast of Western North Africa.
Ship suffered water ingress and was found to be smuggling drugs
The 'Natalia' was intercepted by Spanish joint forces of police and customs about 40 nautical miles south of Feurteventura on Aug 8, 2021, on suspicion of narcotics trafficking. The ship, en route from the Beirut via Iskenderun to Lagos, was found by enforcement team to be in a state of emergency, suffering from water ingress and engine breakdowns. It was taken to Las Palmas and docked there at 9.30 p.m. It took quite some time and efforts to secure her safety. She was thoroughly searched, and 638 bales containing nearky 20 tons of hashish were found hidden in the cargo holds, among bags with legal cargo. The 11 Syrian crew members were arrested. An investigation was launched and the ship detained. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iK_K4x9mPAw&feature=emb_title
