Crew member was thrown over board and died

Thu Sep 08 12:43:59 CEST 2022 Timsen

Daniel Haufiku, 49, a crew member of the 'Laxe Dos', died after he fell off the fishing vessel off the coast of Walvis Bay and drowned on Sep 6, 2022. The ship had sailed from the port on Sep 3 with 22 crew members on board for fishing purposes. On Sep 6 at around 07:50 a.m., the crew members were busy deploying nets to the North whilst the deckhand was trying to secure a swinging door, which swung and hit the man on his right side resulting in him being thrown overboard. A life-ring was thrown to Vatileni, and he managed to get a grip of the ring for a few seconds, however, lost hold of it resulting in his drowning. The deceased was reportedly dressed in his protective gear whilst he was in the turbulent waters. The body was retrieved from the sea and pulled on board. He was declared dead at around 08:45 a.m. The vessel brought the deceased’s body back to Walvis Bay port on Sep 7 at around 9:30 p.m. The deceased next of kin were informed. The police will conduct postmortem examination to determine the cause of death. The investigation continued.
