Sailor wedged between hatches and suffered life threateining injuries

Wed Sep 19 11:02:25 CEST 2012 Timsen

A 48-year-old crew member of the "Alba" was wedged between two hatches in the afternoon of Sep 16, 2012, in the industrial port of Emden. The Ghanaian sailor got trapped during repair and maintenance work on the container ship and suffered life-threatening injuries to the head and torso. He was freed with a chain hoist by other ship workers soon after and stabilized by a medical team which had boarded the ship with a small ladder. A rescue team of the fire brigade then took him off with a turntable ladder before he was flown with the rescue helicopter Christoph 32 to a hospital in Oldenburg. On Sep 17 the container ship was investigated by employees of the Technical-Nautical Attendant Service from Hamburg regarding the working safety on board. The "Alba" ex "Granat" is actually being refitted after a period auf lay up.
