CGT complains about working conditions of Chinese crew

Tue Feb 24 10:43:50 CET 2015 Timsen

The "Lord Star" after hitting a rock in the Baltic Sea in Dec 2014, thereby damaging more than 80% of its length, was still being patched and repaired in Brest. Meanwhile the CGT at Damen and members of the Health, Safety Committee and Working Conditions (HSC) were dealing with the working conditions of the 20 Chinese sailors on board and drew attention on these in a communique on Feb 23. Reliable sources had indicated that the sailors handled heavy fuel oil in the holds with a shovel after the accident, and they had no personal protective equipment. One sailor had been hospitalized.

Damaged bulk carrier caused oil spill in Brest

Sat Dec 13 16:51:53 CET 2014 Timsen

On Dec 12, 2014, the "Lord Star", being under repair at the Damen Yard in Brest, suffered an oil leak which caused a pollution of 400 square meters. In order to contain the spread of oil, oil booms were laid out around the dock number 2, where the ship was berthed. The maritime prefecture, the Navy, the police, firefighters and representatives of the Centre for Documentation, Research and Experimentation on Accidental Water Pollution were on site. The bulk carrier had suffered hull damage during a grounding in the Baltic Sea and berthed on Dec 9 for inspections. On Dec 16 divers were to check the condition of the hull.
