10 abandoned seafarers repatriated
Ten Kenyan crew members of the 'Nina' who were abandoned in Mozambique by their employer in August 2019, arrived at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa in the first week of Jan, 2020. They had been abandoned at Port Pemba in Mozambique by an agent who recruited them to work on the vessel. The seamen were rescued and repatriated through diplomatic channels between Kenya and Mozambique. Their plight highlighted rising cases of maritime impropriety on the eastern seaboard of Africa. The Mombasa based East Africa International Transport Federation was also working with the Mozambican government to detain the vessel until all salaries, allowances and penalties paid to free the 10 crew members have been recovered even if it involves auctioning the vessel. The crew members who claimed that they were owed more than 72,000 US Dollar in salaries and allowances, were detained on the vessel for five months by the Mozambican immigration and their passports confiscated for overstaying in the country.
