Crew of abandoned ship rescued

The Chinese Search and Rescue (SAR) centre coordinated a rescue operationfor the crew of the 'Apollo Triumph' with authorities in Mozambique, Madagascar, and other nearby coastal states. The agency reached out to other nearby vessels to request assistance and contacted state-owned China COSCO to see if there were any Chinese owned or operated vessels in the vicinity. On Dec 27 at about 2 a.m. the container m/v 'AS Christiana' (IMO:9311799), en route from Mundra to Zadur, arrived on scene, found all 19 crew members in a life raft and brought them safely on board, bringing the operation to a successful close.

Reefer abandoned due to fire

The' Apollo Triumph' caught fire in the Mozambique Channel on Dec 26, 2023. The 19 crew members abandoned the ship and went into life rafts. The ship was adrift since around 7.30 p.m. UTC Dec 26, and initial attempts to extinguish it failed. The last available AIS position was 45 nautical miles east of the Mozambique coast. The ship was en route from Cape Town to Dar-es-Salaam.
