Boxship slammed into container barge

Sun Dec 18 17:25:54 CET 2016 Timsen

On Dec 17, 2016, at 4 p.m. the "MOL Brilliance" with a crew of 24 on board was in collision with the coastal container barge "Cai Mep 28" (Reg.-No.: SG-7559) of the Jiangnan company in Saigon with a crew of four on board, on the Cai Mep-Thi Vai river in the Tan Phuoc Commune, Tan Thanh District. The accident happened while leaving Phu My, Vung Tau, with a pilot of the Pilotage Ltd. Co. from Tân Cảng on board. The container ship struck the barge at starboard side with its bulbous bow. The 120-TEU-barge was punctured at starboard side and started to list to port. At 10 p.m. the ships still were stuck together but have been relocated to an area about one kilometer from the accident site. The containers were hoisted from the barge and taken to warehouses of the Cai Border Station for storage. The "MOL Brilliance" was manoeverd towards the Go Gia anchorage in the Cai Mep river, and tied up at buoys which were anchored temporarily in the Go Gia River for investigations. The accident happpened while the "MOL Brilliance" was turning on the Cai Mep-Thi River towards sea when she suddenly lost control and sailed towards a wharf off which the "Cai Mep 28" was trying to pass. Due to the short distance, the barge captain could not escape the approaching bulbous bow.
