Tug involved in wreck removal off Fort Pierce Inlet
On Mar 6, 2014, the "Mr. Connor" pulling the barge "RMG-400" from Mobile, Alabama, arrived oat the Fort Pierce Inlet in order to removing a barge which sank on Feb 24. The 110-by-30-by-7-foot barge sank in the mouth of the inlet, which is a difficult location for removal. Currents present challenges, and dive time for the salvage team is just two to three hours a day because of the conditions. The Army Corps of Engineers contracted with Resolve Marine Group of Fort Lauderdale to remove the barge which sank as a 54-foot boat towed it in against an outgoing tide. The decades’ old barge took on water and foundered, resulting in the death of a Miami man. Three other men survived. The salvage operation will last the rest of the week, weather and other issues permitting. The Coast Guard anticipated closing the inlet in its entirety during the actual removal process. The Coast Guard had restricted boat traffic in the inlet to vessels with a draft of less than 16-feet.
