MV Armada Purnama 9101807

Wed Nov 24 12:51:10 CET 2010 Timsen

After the collision between the "Green Valley”,and the “Tiger Spring" at the confluence of the Hooghly and Rupnarayan rivers near Nurpur, the "Tiger Spring" could be stabilized and righted. It has a large gap in its starboard side and is resting on a sandbar outside the shipping lane. The "Green Valley" had pushed the ship onto the bar immediately after the collision to prevent it from sinking. An oil spilll of about 15 tons was tackled with chemicals and oil absorbents. The "Tiger Spring" will have to be towed to Kolkata after the leak has been temporarily patched within the next 2-3 days. The collision was caused by a rudder failure of the "Tiger Spring" at a point where ships have to make a 90-degree-turn to port. The situation was made worse by strong currents when the "Green Valley" was approaching at this time, so that it struck the "Tiger Spring" amidships. The 12 men aboard the "Tiger Spring" and the crew of 21 of the "Green Valley" were not hurt in the accident.
