Crew members fined for cargo mishandling ahead of explosion

A Dubai court has found that the crew of the 'Ocean Trader' mishandled peroxide caused an the at the busy Jebel Ali port on July 7, 2021, on Aug 18, 2022. The Dubai Misdemeanor Court sentenced five crew members on board the vessel to one-month suspended prison sentences and fined them this sum for not caring for the cargo and allowing fumes to build up. Five other companies also have been fined this sum each over their role in the blast. The cargo had arrived at the port on June 27 and was kept in direct sunlight for 12 days until the day of the incident. The Indian Captain had maintained his innocence; the four other crew charged were from Pakistan. Prosecutors also said the blast injured five people, though authorities at the time insisted no one was hurt.

No consequences for port operations by fire

The fire aboard the 'Ocean Trader' was brought under control within 45 minutes. The logistics and operational facilities of Jebel Ali Port have not suffered any damage, and the incident has not affected the movement of ships due to its distance from the main shipping lane and the fairway in the port. The ship had anchored on the outskirts of Dubai when the fires wree burning at and near the container ship which has been sailing up and down the coast of the UAE since April.

Freighter rocked by explosion

A huge explosion followed by fire occurred on board of sthe 'Ocean Trader' at Dubai port in the night of July 7, 2021. The blast occurred in a container holding cleaning products. The explosion shook buildings throughout the city and could be felt as far as 25 km away. The ship had berthed short time before after having spent several days at the port's anchorage. Containers with inflammables self-ignited and exploded. The fire was brought under control on July 8. The firefighters managed to put out the blaze at the port amid smoldering wreckage as plumes of smoke billowed through the air.
