Cement bags salvaged from grounded ship

Mon Oct 15 22:16:32 CEST 2018 Timsen

Around 4500 bags of cement have been salvaged from the "Star Liberty"that ran aground at the San Jose de Buenavista Port due to the strong waves caused by the southwest monsoon. The ship was carrying a consignment of 20,000 bags at the time. The salvaged cement has been stored at a dump in Barangay Pantao. The salvage team was hoping to complete the removal of the cement from the ship by the end of October 2018 and then the ship may be salvaged and taken back to Cebu for repairs.

Cargo ship grounded in monsoon

Mon Sep 03 12:03:43 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "Star Liberty", 383 gt, ran aground 300 meters off the shore of Barangay 4. The ship with a cargo of cements and construction materials was headed for the port of San Jose in Antique, when it grounded on Sep 3, 2018, at 9.30 a.m. The ship was anchored at the San Jose de Buenavista Port of Cebu since Aug. 28 for unloading 20,000 bags of cement to a consignee in the province. But inclement weather, induced by the southwest monsoon, caused the ship to drift onto a rocky area after the anchor dragged . As the engine could not be started, the vessel got stuck, and the captain order his crew of 22 to abandon ship. 12 of them suffered bruises and were brought to hospital for treatment. The 10 others were taken to the Antique Coast Guard Station. The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council had oil spill booms ready to be used in case of an oil spill. The vessel had on board around six tons of diesel when it sailed from Cebu.
