Collapsed bridge recovered

Mon May 25 09:57:31 CEST 2020 Timsen

Ten days after the allision of the 'Nawatrans X', 1510 ts (EU-No.: 02318913), with the Kunkenmühle Bridge on the Dortmund-Ems-Canal near Moorlage during its southbound transit of the waterway, a sheerleg recovered the sunken bridge section from the canal which had been closed for ship traffic since. The salvage costs were around 600.000 Euro. The wreckage was transported off with a barge and the waterway released now. The Emsbüren municipality will replace the bridge which may take some years. The 'Nawatrans X' was berthed in Leer from May 16 to 21 and sailed from the port after repairs at 9.40 a.m., bound to Oss, ETA May 22.

NAWATRANS 10

Tue May 12 19:36:39 CEST 2020 Timsen

On May 11, 2020, at 9.15 a.m.the 'Nawatrans X', 1510 ts (EU-No.: 02318913), allided with the Kunkenmühle Bridge on the Dortmund-Ems-Canal near Moorlage during its southbound transit of the waterway. The midbody of the bridge broke off and fell into the canal. The ship was unloaded and had not taken on enough ballast water for the safe transit so that the bow rose too high when the ship which was sailing for a logistic company in Moers took up speed, so that it hit the construction which had a height of 4,5 meters above the water. The Polish crew stopped the ship and waited for the arrival of the water police. Then it was moved back, stern first, to the lock Hesselte. The Dortmund-Ems-Canal had to be barred for shipping at the accident site until the sunken bridge section has been recovered. There was no timeline for this operation yet. The damage was, however, estimated to be some million Euros. The bridge was built in 1954 as a steel-concrete-construction and has a width of 61 meters. Also the damage to the remaining sections as well as to the roadwork was significant, and there was still the damage of further collapses. The police barred off any approach to the bridge site in the Emsbüren region.
