Fire in container cargo

Tue Nov 24 17:23:15 CET 2015 Timsen

The "Northern Volition" called at the Tan Cang-Cai Mep Internatinal Terminal in Phu My - Vung Tau on Nov 24, 2015, at 9 pm. with at least two burnt out containers. The vessel had reported a fire in containers, and asked for assistance on Nov 23. Two firefighting tugs were dispatched to the ship and started pouring water over the smoldering containers. The fire was extinguished, but the "Northern Volition" called at port of Vung Tau to unload the burned cargo and check for fire in others. After it was estimated that there was no danger for the other cargo and full inspection from the local authorities, the container carrier resumed its voyage to Shanghai. After the container were unloaded it was estimated that they were loaded with bagasse, which inflamed by the high temperature inside the container. The spontaneous combustion caused the fire, which fortunately did not extended to another containers, thanks to the fast reaction of the crew. The ship was en route from Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai with more than 900 containers on board.
