Bulk carrier assisted in rescue of 24 migrants

Sat Oct 09 21:14:13 CEST 2021 Timsen

The 'Occitan Sky', en route from Fortalza to Las Palmas, located a migrant boat in the morning of Oct 7, 2021, about 155,5 kilometers south of Gran Canaria, and alerted Salvamento Marítimo. The SAR helicopter Helimer evacuated three of the 24 migrants to the Hospital de Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín this morning, all of Maghreb origin, after the bulk carrier alerted the Maritime Rescue coordinating center in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Salvamento Marítimo in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria decided to send the 'Guardamar Concepción Arenal' to the scene, which was able to rescue its 24 occupants, two of them women, at 10:30 p.m. Faced with the poor condition of three of the people, they were hoisted at 00:30 a.m. and taken to the heliport of the hospital of Gran Canaria. The 'Guardamar Concepción Arenal' returned to the Arguineguín dock with the other 21 people who were disembarked in Gran Canaria on Oct 8 at 04:30 a.m.
