Luxury yacht damaged in marina fire

Fri Apr 24 11:07:26 CEST 2015 Timsen

The "Star" was damaged by fire in Fort Lauderdale at the Bahia Mar Yachting Center when the yacht "Journey", berthed next to it, went up into flames which soared more than 50 feet into the night sky in the evening of Apr 22, 2015 at 10.15 p.m. Fort Lauderdale fire rescue crews were alerted but could not keep the "Journey", a 68-foot Fairline fiberglass boat valued at $3 million, became a total loss. The "Star", a Kingship Marine design valued at $14.5 million, had an estimated $300,000 in damage to its hull. Both vessels were built in 2008 and were tied up alongside each other at Dock H835 in the marina's northeast corner. The fireboat 49 was joined by fire trucks from the station, less than a quarter-mile south of the gated marina. A Fort Lauderdale police marine patrol officer happened to be on the water and was able to rescue two staffers off the aft of the "Star", because its gangplank was blocked by flames. One firefighter was treated on site for heat exhaustion. The close proximity to Fire Station 49 and the firefighters who responded by water proved lucky for the owner of the "Star". The fireboat actually saved the 115-foot boat from receiving more damage than it did, by knocking down the main body of fire. It took about 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze that started at about 10:15 p.m., and a bit longer to put out hot spots that flared up.
