Grounding in Unimak Island
The 'Pacific Sounder' with four crew members on board ran aground on the western shore of Unimak Island between Unalaska and the Alaska Peninsula in the morning of June 17, 2022. The vessel issued a mayday call at 10.43 a.m. The 'Polar Sea' headed to the scene and found the crew unharmed. The vessel owner has hired Resolve Marinein Dutch Harbour for the recovery. The ship has 21,000 gallons fuel on board which have to be extracted first. A Coast Guard helicopter did not observe any pollution on June 26. Resolve Marine said the 'Pacific Sounder' is too stuck for them to be able to tow it. Instead, they will have to scuttle it. The Coast Guard is currently investigating what led to the incident.
