Cargo ship sank off Sangeang Island
The KM 'Permata Asia' sank on May 7, 2022, north of Sangeang Island, Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, Lesser Sunda islands, in the Flores Sea. The ship which was loaded with cement suffered water ingress in the engine room and headed towards Sangeang Island, probably in hope of running aground to avoid sinking. The source of the water ingress had been repaired several times, but finally the captain of the ship issued a distress signal. The crew tried to pump the water out manually, but could not cope with the flooding. A swift response came from the navy and police forces. About two nautical miles off the northern coast of the island, the engine died, and the ship sank. All 18 crew members were rescued by the Indonesian authorities, and all of them were safe.
