Blockade breaker arrived in Istanbul

Tue Aug 29 11:42:53 CEST 2023 Timsen

On Aug 29 at 11 a.m. UTC the 'Primus', loaded with steel products for, among others, the Antwerp trader SteelForce, arrived in Istanbul. The vessel was one of a fleet of about 60 other ships which spent 1,5 years in mothballs in Odesa. The ship was able to sail on Aug 26, accompanied by heavily guarded escort vessels, being the second vessel to break the Russian blockade, after the 'Joseph Schulte' sailed on Aug 14. The success has probably has to do with the fact that Ukraine is now much stronger in the air and at sea than a year ago. Furthermore, according to the Ministry of Reconstruction, decree '548' has been issued, whereby Ukraine guarantees that it will be responsible for the ship and the full cargo. The Flemish traders SteelForce and EMS, who have a third of the cargo under their care, it is a problem that the 7000 tons steel could have been affected by lying at the bottom of the hold for so long, and it has to be seen if it therefore is still usable for the applications for which it was used. Customers have already received replacement goods from various other countries, but this must be further examined with the insurance companies.

Second blockade breaker en route from Odessa to Varna

Mon Aug 28 10:15:49 CEST 2023 Timsen

On Aug 26, 2023, at around 5.50 a.m. UTC, the 'Primus' left the port of Odessa as the second ship attempting to break through the Russian blockade of Ukrainian ports en route to Varna. 1,5 hours later the ship, which had been locked since Feb 2022, turned back and sailed to Odessa anchorage and moored at 11 a.m. The ship weighed anchor again on Aug 27 at 7.30 a.m. and resumed the voyage, transiting the Black Sea at a speed of 11 knots.
