POPS
The USCG was called by the "Pops" towing a 165-foot deck barge that was taking on water 20 miles south of San Luis Pass on Feb 7, 2011 at 6 a.m., stating that the vessel was dead in the water and taking on water in its stern void space while transiting from Brownsville to Pascagoula. From Houston an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter was launched to deliver dewatering equipment. Prior to its arrvial, the crew of the "Pops" was able to restore power to its engines. The Coast Guard Cutter "Manta" was launched to assist with marine inspectors from CG Marine Safety Unit Texas City on board, who determined that a gash between two deck plates in the stern void space caused the water ingress. The crew of the "Pops" was able to dewater the compartment using equipment already onboard. The "Pops" is being escorted to a dock in Galveston where it will undergo temporary repairs and then transit to Morgan City to be dry docked.
