CG report regarding deadly collision not released

Sat Apr 21 11:48:13 CEST 2012 Timsen

The U.S. Coast Guard has not yet released its report on an accident in the Mississippi Sound that killed three workers aboard the "Sandy Point" in the night of May 18, 2011, in its collision with with the "Eurus London" which was leaving the Port of Gulfport, off the western tip of West Ship Island in the Gulfport Ship Channel. 11 Omega employees were rescued, and two others made their way to the "Eurus London". Family members of the three deceased seamen and five workers who claim injuries from the accident have filed lawsuits. Omega and "Eurus London" have filed claims to limit their liability, and are also suing each other. Omega blames the "Eurus London" personnel for the accident, saying the cargo ship was traveling at an unsafe speed. Attorneys for the "Eurus London" contend the pogy boat was passing outside the Ship Channel when it suddenly turned 90 degrees, striking the "Eurus London" in the channel. The Coast Guard report cannot be used as evidence in the lawsuits, which have been consolidated in U.S. District Court in Gulfport. A spokesman of the Coast Guard Office of Investigations and Casualty Analysis on Apr 19, 2012, said the accident investigation remains open. The investigation itself looks to be mostly completed, if not completed, but there are several safety recommendations that have developed from this case. These recommendations require commandant review and approval, which typically is a long process.
