Tanker rescued 88 migrants

Fri Oct 06 10:54:31 CEST 2023 Timsen

An SAR operation for a total of 88 migrants, among them 43 men, 21 women, 18 minor boys and 06 minor girls, aboard a motor boat was carried out from the evening of Oct 3, 2023, until the morning of Oct 4 west of Akrotiri Tainaros. Immediately three passing ships were engaged as well as a patrol boat. The 'Sara II', which had spotted the boat, picked up the migrants after the arrival of the patrol vessel. Afterwards, they were safely transported to the port of Kalamata and disembarked with the launch 'Panagia Thalassini', all in good health. The Central Port Authority of Kalamata launched the preliminary investigation. Four persons, aged 33, 28, 38 and 28 years old, had an active role in the transportation of the migrants, being members of an international criminal organization and consequently were arrested for violating Law 3386/05 (Illegal entry into the country), Law 4251/2014 (Illegal trafficking of foreigners), as well as of article 187 of the Civil Code (Criminal Organization) and article 306 of the Criminal Code. (Exposure of life at risk). The boat had left the Turkish coast for Italy, while each foreigner paid the amount of about 7,000 USD for its transport.
