Italian Marines freed bulk carrier

Tue Apr 05 19:18:46 CEST 2022 Timsen

Italian Marines from the frigate 'Luigi Rizzo', which last month took over the anti-pirate patrol in the Gulf of Guinea, after the Danish frigate 'Esbern Snare' was called home due to the developments in Europe, have freed the crew oof the 'Arch Gabriel', who had been attacked by pirates. They had sought safety in the ship's citadel when the ship was attacked by an unknown number of pirates on April 3 approximately 300 nautical miles south of Lagos. The ship had turned off its AIS signal, to make it more difficult for pirates to find the ship. The crew did not succeed in preventing the pirates from intruding on board, but all crew members managed to seek safety in the citadel. Over radio from the citadel, the crew sounded the alarm to the frigate, which was just over 280 nautical miles from the drifting bulk carrier and immediately sailed in the direction of the 'Arch Gabriel' at full speed. As soon as a boarding team was assembled, it was dispatched by the ship's helicopter. By the time the helicopter reached the 'Arch Gabriel', the pirates had left the ship. The Marines entered the bulk carrier and went through all the rooms until it was clear that the ship was secure. The crew was then freed from the citadel. After repairing the equipment the pirates had destroyed, the bulk career resumed sailing, and the Marines left the ship again.

Attack in Gulf of Guinea

Mon Apr 04 10:08:29 CEST 2022 Timsen

The 'Arch Gabriel' was attacked by pirates on April 3, 2022, at 7 p.m. UTC Apr 3 in the Gulf of Guinea, about 305 nautical miles south of Lagos. The ship’s AIS was off since the attack time. The vessel was cruising in the area in legs since middle March having Lagos as port of destination. She had departed Houston in mid-February and was likely waiting for her next contract, meaning that she could have been seen as a target of opportunity having been idle for such a long period.
