Unloading of grounded ship has started

The unloading process of the cargo of urea has started on the 'Nordea Star', grounded off the coast of Kastamonu, as of Feb 15. 6497 tons of urea is poured into sacks with the help of cranes and transported to İnebolu Port by tugs. After the unloading is completed, damage assessment studies will be carried out and the ship will be delivered to the shipowner after being brought to a floating position. The 'TCSG 96' of the İnebolu Coast Guard continued precautionary patrol duties around the ship. Measures were being taken to minimize possible environmental risks and ensure environmental safety. Ship ran aground at anchor position off Cide

The 'Nordea Star' got its destiantion deviated and anchored off Cide on Jan 18. The vessel's port access permission was not issued due to the heavy list to starboard side, posing a capsizing risk. During the stay at Cide anchorage, the vessel dragged anchor due to a loss of power, went adrift and grounded in a shallow water area at the coast of İlyasbey on Jan 20. The incident location was declared as a restricted zone. No leaks or pollution have been reported so far. The Aras Salvage was tasked with the further response. Cargo ship adrift in Black Sea

The 'Nordea Star' was derelict and adrift unmanned in the Black Sea in the vicinity of pos. 43 49 40 N, 030 38 00 E, on Jan 3, 2024, at 9.10 p.m. GMT. The ship, en route from Trabzon to Chornomorsk Port, with a cargo of 6,497 tons of urea, had suffered a cargo shift off the Romanian coast. The 17 crew members, 16 of whom were Syrian nationals and one Egyptian national, were evacuated off the coast of Romania. The vessel drifted towards the village of Ilyasbey in the Cide district of Kastamonu on Jan 15 with a heavy list to starboard side and in danger of sinking. Teams of the TCSG 96 Inebolu Coast Guard Boat Command patrolled the region as a precautionary measure.
