Oil from sunken tanker reached shore
An oil spill from the sunken 'Parth' has reached the Vengurla coast in the Sindhudurg district in the morning hours of Sep 17. Locals initially thought it was a normal oil spill as reported during the rainy spell. But the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) confirmed that the spill was from the vessel. The ship sank in deep water following an engine malfunction. The field officers collected samples from the Vengurla coast. Locals were advised to stay away from spills. The bitumen spills will be collected and scientifically disposed of and there is no major threat, said an MPCB official. However, the chemical expert said, as long as bitumen is in a closed container there is no immediate danger.
