Master of the Maersk Riesa died during voyage

At around 17:00 UTC Sep 21 2012 MRCC Kalamata, Greece, received a distress message from tanker Maersk Riesa, reporting 60-years old Master of the vessel suffering a heart attack, and requiring immediate hospitalization. Tanker sailing in Ionian sea changed course and headed for Kalamata, MRCC dispatched an Air Force helicopter, but helicopter wasn’t able to airlift the Master due to technical problem. Master died, after consultation with MRCC and manager of the vessel it was decided to resume voyage to Malta from Aliaga, Turkey. Tanker was to arrive to Malta in the afternoon Sep 22, but as of early morning Sep 23 was still under way due to delay off Greece. The crew consists of Georgia, Filipino, Russia and Ukraine nationalities, Master probably is of Russian or Ukrainian nationality. Maritime Bulletin http://www.odin.tc

Maritime Bulletin www.odin.tc received a letter with the following information: At November 2010 during open sea loading operation (Island Kolguev, Barents sea ) from shore to tanker MAERSK RIESA IMO 9252292 has occurred the break up underwater hose with crude oil. Crew of the tanker, at deterioration of the weather condition, did not be able to value situation and stop the cargo operation in good time. Information about pollution is absent because of remoteness of the region of loading. Remarks: Now vessel enroute Netherlands in North sea, visited Russian waters in Barents sea in November twice, on Nov 5-6 and on Nov 26-27.
