Tanker thwarted pirate attack

The 'Tornado', enmroute from Port Harcourt to Lagos, thwarted a pirate attack in position 05 30 00N, 003 41 00E, about 59 miles south of Lagos on Jan 20, 2020, at 11 p.m. A skiff with five or six gunmen on board approached the vessel, and a long ladder with hooks was seen on the skiff. The tanker escaped at a speed of 12 knots.

Nigerian pirates have released the crew of a German oil tanker hijacked six days ago, RIA Novosti reports quoting an employment agency head. “The crewmembers were freed last night. All are safe and sound,” director of a Russian sailor recruiting firm Sergei Panyushkin said. The pirates seized the MT Cape Bird, a tanker with a mixed crew of 20, nationals of Russia, Georgia, Ukraine and Latvia, in waters off Lagos on Saturday night.

Nigerian pirates hijacked m/t Cape Bird with 20 crew off the coast of Nigeria, some 70 nm to the south of Lagos, at night Oct 08 2011. Crew is safe. No other details available at the moment. International Maritime Bureau, in its’ widely published report, didn’t mention, as usual, the name of the vessel, including number and nationalities of the crew.
