Tanker damaged in collision off New York

Tue May 15 09:22:56 CEST 2018 Timsen

In the evening of May 12, 2018, the loaded "Tofteviken" was in collision with the 84-ft-fishing vessel "Polaris" nearly 30 miles southeast of Bridgehampton, New York. The "Tofteviken" was enroute from Philadelphia to New York, while the Polaris was sailing back to its homeport in Massachusetts after a night of fishing. The "Polaris" suffered damage to its bow and outrigger. There was a crew of seven aboard the vessel with no report of injuries. It was able to return to its homeport safely. The "Tofteviken" suffered an approximate 30-foot long gash along its portside hull. There were no injuries reported to the crew aboard the tanker either. The vessel dropped anchor in pos. 40° 29.12' N 073° 36.45' W off New York for investigations of the Coast Guard New York and the declaration that it was safe to continue into port afterreviewing class reports. Coast Guard marine inspectors were investigating the cause of the collision and assessing the damage to the "Tofteviken"’s hull, to ensure appropriate repairs.
