Bulk carrier rescued five fishermen
Five Sri Lankan fishermen have been rescued by the 'YM Summit', en route form Merak to Laem Cabang, 170 nautical miles east of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, after the Beruwala-based fishing vessel 'Asela Putha' ,capsized off the coast of the Maldives. There were six fishermen on board the vessel, however, one was missing. The rescue was coordinated by Indian Coast Guard Maritime rescue coordination center (Mumbai) and Chennai. The castaways were due to be handed over to the Navy by the merchant ship off the coast of Galle in the afternoon of Jan 8, 2021. The owner of the fishing vessel had reported to the Beruwala Police on Jan 5 that communication with the vessel had been disrupted. The Navy informed the Maldivian and Mumbai naval authorities about the incident as well.
