Crash avoided by dropping anchor

Wed Aug 22 09:52:43 CEST 2012 Timsen

The "APL Oman" had to drop anchor in the Thimble Shoals shipping channel in the early morning of Aug 21, 2012, to avoid the threat of a collision with two Navy tugboats which were on a training exercise. Investigators inspected the vessels after the incident but found no damage. The crew of the container ship and a harbor pilot were applauded for avoiding a crash. The incident happened at around 6:30 a.m. near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The tugs were pulling a roro ship from Little Creek to Fort Story and were heading across the bow of the "APL Oman". In this situation the pilot and crew on board the container ship made the right decision to drop anchor. The Coast Guard is still investigating the incident.
