Ukraine have reportedly carried out a drone attack on a Russian “shadow fleet” tanker off the coast of Libya in the Mediterranean. This marks a significant escalation in the maritime dimension of the war. It is the first attack in the Mediterranean since the invasion began, signaling Kyiv’s willingness to extend its reach far beyond the Black Sea. The vessel Qendil reportedly sustained critical damage during the attack on Friday morning.
Wood Mackenzie tracking data shows the tanker operated under multiple identities this year switching names from Ionia to Spark to Qendil through 2025 alone. The vessel has been shuttling between Russian ports such as Novorossiysk and Ust-Luga to India’s Sikka port where it has been regularly discharging at the Reliance owned refinery. The AIS has reguralry been turned off.
These frequent name changes and deceptive practices are hallmarks of the shadow fleet, which Moscow relies on to move oil and bypass restrictions. The strike underscores Ukraine’s intent to disrupt Russain shadow fleet flows and raises the stakes for Russain vessels operating under false flags in international waters.
