NGO ship assisted 48 migrants
On Aug 2, 2023, the 'Astral' assisted 40 migrants who were aboard a precarious boat, which had suffered an engine failure, until they were rescued by the Italian authorities, which the organization had alerted to the situation.
More than 90 migrants rescued
More than 90 migrants were rescued on April 27 by the 'Astral' of the Spanish non-governmental organization (NGO) Open Arms, in three different operations, in addition to recovering the body of a floating corpse. During the third relief operation it rescued about 20 migrants in a small iron boat on the Mediterranean, in addition to a body that was found floating and was picked up by the ship. Members of Open Arms, who are awaiting instructions from the Italian Coast Guard, had previously rescued a second boat on which 45 migrants were traveling, including nine women, 10 minors and a baby. During the early hours of April 27, the 'Astral' provided assistance to a boat with 38 migrants, including minors, shortly after leaving Lampedusa. The 'Astral' had just left Lampedusa after arriving on April 25 after rescuing 47 people from a boat in international waters.
NGO ships rescued 122 migrants in two missions
The "Astral" has rescued 47 migrants on April 24, 2023, in international waters near the island of Lampedusa, including a baby and a pregnant woman in serious condition. The MRCC in Rome had directed the NGO ship to the boat in danger. and after the crew started handing out life jackets, the inflatable boat began to sink in front of them. The "Astral" was towards Lampedusa with the rescued on board. The "Geo Barents" also rescued 75 migrants, including 40 minors and 13 women, who were on an unseaworthy wooden boat in international waters near Libya. All were now safe on board and were being cared for by the team.
