Survivors taken ashore

Mon Jul 16 14:25:21 CEST 2018 Timsen

The 25 survivors of the "Dorneda" reached the mainland on July 15 aboard the two ships that had picked them up in storm-tossed seas. 16 survivors, and the body of one deceased crew member, arrived in Montevideo on the Spanish-flagged fishing vessel "Farruco". The nine other survivors from the sinking of the trawler Dorneda arrived in Puerto Madryn, in Patagonia, aboard the trawler "Beagle I". The body of the dead man, a Peruvian, was transferred to the morgue. The Spanish and Peruvian consuls were at the dock in Montevideo to greet the "Farruco". Poor weather had delayed its arrival. Local prosecutors would be taking statements from crew members.

Fri Jul 13 11:17:35 CEST 2018 Timsen

Nine of the 25 fishermen rescued from the "Dorneda", which had sunk in position 45 08 S 060 11 W in the night of July 11, were taken aboard the Argentine flagged trawler "Beagle I" (IMO:7312074) to Mar del Plata in the afternoon of July 12, the other 17 were expected in Montevideo aboard the Spanish trawler "Farruco" (IMO: 9241906) on July 13 which had participated in the search for the missing 27th man, a Peruvian. On the whole the ships had rescued five Spaniards, eight Indonesians, 13 Peruvians alive and recovered one Peruvian dead. The search for the missing man was continued by two Argenine aircraft. The trawler had activated its distres beacon on July 11 at 10 p.m. 204 miles off Chubut in the Camarones Bay resp. 308 miles off Comodoro Rivadavia after large amounts of water had entered the engine room over the stern ramp and had caused a blackout. The crew deployed two rafts and a rigid and abandoned ship. The last signal was issued at 10.10 p.m. and received by the Puerto Belgrano Naval Base vom MRSC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Sub-Center). On July 12 at 2.42 a.m. the 'Beagle I“ located two rafts and started with the rescue mission, being joined by the 'Farruco‘ short time later.<

Trawler capsized and sank, one dead, one missing

Wed Jul 11 19:41:56 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "Dorneda" capsized and sank on July 11, 2018, in pos. 45 08S 060 11 W in the South Atlantic, about 200 miles off the Argentine coast. The Navy was alerted in the night of July 10 that the trawler was in trouble. Early next morning, the Spanish fishing trawler "Farruco" found two life rafts and a lifeboat with 25 crewmembers from Spain, Peru, Morocco and Indonesia aboard, one of whom perished. The British-flagged "Beagle I" also participated in the rescue and was taking the survivors to shore in Puerto Madryn, 800 miles south of Buenos Aires. The Navy said was still searching for a missing crewmember. Besides the two rafts with survivors also, two other rafts and other debris were found that could not be recovered. An SAR guard aircraft of the Argentine Navy (S-2T) Turbotracker, decoloured the area of operations to join the search and perform a visual rake and returned to the city of Trelew for low visibility. Several fishing vessels continued to collaborate actively, among them the “Navigator” which in the last hours recovered one of the rafts and the semi-rigid boat. The “Beagle I”, which carried on board nine of the rescued crew members, by decision of its owner, proceeded to the port of Mar del Plata, anticipating their arrival on July 13 at noon. Meanwhile, the fishing vessel “Farruco” will remain in the area in search tasks until the last hours of light and then will go to take port in the city of Montevideo, by order of its owner, to disembark the rest of the rescued personnel. The trawler apparently capsized during trawl upheaving, the trawl went abeam of ship’s hull when the rudder was hard a board, heavy seas were also contributing to the loss of stability. Waves washed over the stern ramp and flooded the trawler’s engine room. The engine failed and the vessel went adrift.
