Jordanian ferry with 689 passengers catches fire in Red Sea, no casualities

Mon Mar 05 15:53:59 CET 2012 arnekiel

A Jordanian ferry caught fire Monday in the Red Sea after sailing from the Port of Aqaba en route to the Egyptian port of Nuweiba. The captain of the ferry, dubbed "Amman" informed authorities in Aqaba that the fire was brought under control at 5:15 local time. "No casualties were reported," said Aqaba Governor Ali Al Shra'a, who followed up on measures taken to put off the fire. Director General of the Arab Bridge Maritime Company, the owner of the vessel, Hussein So'ub said the ship was operating an ordinary trip from Aqaba to Nuweiba, carrying on board 46 vehicles, 20 trucks and five buses, in addition to the 689 passengers. The captain of the ferry told the company that the fire broke out at the kitchen, expecting electrical fault to be the cause of fire. The ferry caught fire about 23 nautical miles from the port of Aqaba. http://www.petra.gov.jo/Public_News/Nws_NewsDetails.aspx?Site_Id=1&lang=2&NewsID=61701&CatID=13&Type=Home>ype=1
