Fire damaged hake freezer scuttled as artificial reef

Fri Apr 20 12:21:17 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "Urabain" joined the submarine parks of the Golfo Nuevo in the morning of Apr 19, 2018. The hake freezer had suffered a fire and was sunk to join other ships that are already part of the artificial parks destined for diving. The owner Iberconsa had rendered the wreck useless after the fire so it was decided to scuttle it after emptying liquids as fuel and bilge water in the recent months as well as removing all equipment in order to leave the hull clean and avoid water pollution. The ship had been moored at berth 4 of the pier "Almirante Storni" of Puerto Madryn when it suffered a fire start of September 2017 and was declared a total loss. Spanish reports with photos and video: http://www.diariojornada.com.ar/210421/sociedad/el_urabain_se_sumo_al_parque_submarino/ https://www.elchubut.com.ar/nota/2018-4-19-15-6-0-el-urabain-fue-hundido-y-es-parte-del-parque-submarino http://www.eldiariodemadryn.com/2018/04/hundieron-el-urabain-y-madryn-tiene-un-nuevo-parque-submarino/

Gutted wreck may become underwater reef

Tue Nov 07 12:00:29 CET 2017 Timsen

After the fire at the Storni wharf in Puerto Madryn on Sep 7, the 350 liters fuel still inside have been drained from the "Urabain". The ship was to be replaced by the end of the year or beginning of 2018, with the same crew which served aboard the "Urabain". Regarding the final destination of the ship there were two options, sinking it for diving or scrapping on the beach. The transfer of the vessel to a shipyard in Mar del Plata for dismantling was ruled out because the fatigue of the hull which makes towing impassible. Scrapping it on the shore of Puerto Madryn would take several more months with the deployment of cutting equipment, removal and transfer of materials. The Government of Chubut through the Ministry of the Environment recommended that the most expeditious solution would be to transform the wreck into a new submarine park, even more now that Puerto Madryn was declared the National Diving Capital. Before, plastic materials that can be polluting must be removed, and certain parts must be cut off that would be dangerous for diving. Once the destination is defined, in two months the ship would be ready to sink, while scrapping would take twice as long. Also the future of the abandoned chinese jigger in Puerto Madryn seems to be getting closer. To sink and transform it into an underwater park for sports activities only needs the signing of the Under Secretary of Fisheries, Tomás Gerpe. The procedures for the cession of the vessel by Prefectura Argentina were expedited. Urabain a total loss after four days of fire

Mon Sep 11 11:27:17 CEST 2017 Timsen

Throughout Sep 9 and 10 the tasks of cooling and debris removal aboard the "Urabain" continued. Smoke was still emanating from the wreck though the fire was under control. There were still areas which could not be accessed. Due to the heat inside the cardboard cargo that was not consumed by the fire, the fire reignited several times, but could quickly be contained by the fire brigade. Water was pumped out to reduce the list to starboard. Oil barriers were laid out around the ship which was presumed to be a total loss. To avoid the risk of a contamination, the 650 tons fuel in its tank will have to be drained. If the ship is able to be towed to another port, it may be scrapped in Mar del Plata. The last option would be to have it beached, and the scrapping be done on site. Spanish report with photos and video: http://lu17.com/tambien-es-noticia/continua-combate-las-llamas-urabain
