The "APL Tennessee" entered the port of Los Angeles on May 4, 2010, at 4 a.m. with two cargo containers leaking nontoxic acid. The Coast Guard, police and fire departments arrived at Berth 303 at Global Gateway South shortly after the ship pulled into the APL shipping terminal. The captain of the ship apparently knew last week that the two 20-ft-boxes were leaking a white powder substance known as trichloroisocyanuric acid. After the Fire Department's hazards materials team deemed the situation as safe. Longshore workers began unloading the ship around 5 a.m. and finally found the leaky cargo containers by 1 p.m. The terminal was closed for 90 minutes as the containers were moved to an area designated by the haz-mat team, where they were emptied. The "APL Tennessee" had been bound for Los Angeles from India. Paramedics examined the ship's crew members, and no illness or injuries were reported.
