Maersk Santos in SAR operation for crew of sinking longliner Teng Ming Yang No. 268

Mon May 13 10:07:42 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Maersk Santos", enroute from Santos to Sigapore, offered assistance for the distressed Taiwanese longliner "Teng Ming Yang No. 268", 99 gt, which had caught fire and sank about 1,100 km from Durban on May 8, 2019. The fishing vessel had caught fire 1,100 km off the coast of Durban, forcing the crew of 16 to abandon the vessel aboard life rafts. The ship reported the fire to the South African Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) at 6:45 a.m., shortly before the crew members abandoned ship. The MRCC reportedly made immediate contact with Taiwan’s Rescue Coordination Center, who were able to direct the "Maersk Santos" to assist the vessel, but was subsequently told to stand down after it was informed that Taiwanese authorities had directed a sister vessel to rescue the fishermen. As of May 8, 7:30 p.m. South Africa time, the vessel was reportedly still burning and sinking 1,100 km south east of Durban. The vessel was a 28 meter tuna long-liner registered in Kaohsiung.
