Tanker was held by pirates for nine days

the captain of the "Pantelena" said that the tanker in fact was hijacked on Aug 13. The tanker was held by pirates for nine days, all crew members were locked in one of the cabins, where they were given enough food and water by pirates. They left the ship after nine days. The captain didn’t say how tanker was released and on what terms. The ship had berthed in Lome, Togo, on Aug 24. The crew included 17 Georgian and two Russian citizen. There were 7.000 tons of fuel on board at the time of hijack.

Tanker allegedly spotted in Pointe Noire

The "Pantelena", which disappeared off the coast of Gabon on 14 August, was allegedly spotted on Agu 22 by the multinational coordination centre in Pointe Noire, Congo. The ship had disappeared from the radar screens of the Libreville Navy’s operational centre with 19 crew members, 17 Georgians and two Russians. The tanker was carrying about 7,000 tons of fuel. Faulty electronic equipment of regional maritime security centre CREMAC was said to have caused the trouble.

Tanker feared to be hijacked

The "Pantelena" was reported missing since late Aug 13, 2018, in the Gulf of Guinea, all contacts were lost. The crew included 17 Georgians and two Russians. The last known position dated 9 p.m. was 00 32 N 008 48 E, 40 miles west of Libreville. The tanker was being deployed in Gulf of Guinea trade, calling ports of coastal states such as Togo, Gabon, Nigeria, Liberia and Ghana. The owner and the crewing company feared a pirates hijack. The ship was carrying around 10,000 metric tonnes of gas oil on board. The tanker was en route to Libreville in Gabon, where it was expected to discharge the product which it had picked up in Togo. The tanker had last been seen more than 30 kilometres off the coast of Gabon. The Lotus Shipping, which owns the tanker, was carrying out an investigation along with the governments of Georgia and Gabon.
