Fregate saved 403 migrants

On Apr 22 a surveillance aircraft of the European Union Naval Force – Mediterranean Operation "Sophia" observed two crowed rubber boats NW of Tripoli. The "Sachsen" was tasked to proceed to the position and took on board 403 migrants from 11 nations, among them 41 women and nine children. They were disembarked in Catania on Apr 24.

Fregate detained suspected pirates

On 20, 2012, the "Sachsen" located a suspicious dhow and detained seven suspected pirates off the coast of Somalia. The frigate was tasked on Oct 19 to locate an Iranian dhow as reports indicated the vessel to be in the hand of pirates. The "Sachsen located the dhow on Oct 20 and established contact with the master of the dhow. He reported his crew was threatened by seven suspected pirates and that he has been beaten. A boarding team detained the seven suspects and confiscated several assault rifles AK47 as well as a Rocket Propelled Grenade launcher. The seven suspects have been transferred to the Sachsen and an investigation was ongoing.
