Divers back at Deep Panuke

Thu Sep 22 11:28:19 CEST 2011 Timsen

Diving operations at the Deep Panuke natural gas project are back on track and scheduled for completion later in fall 2011. Work was on hold for a few days after the "Acergy Discovery" hit the platform on Sep 6. Encana Corp. was satisfied with modifications made by the owner of the vessel to prevent further incidents. An investigation concluded the incident was caused by a hardware system fault within the ship’s dynamic positioning system. Appropriate modifications were made. The "Acergy Discovery" has returned to field and the diving program has resumed on Sep 14, about 250 kilometres southeast of Halifax. Divers were installing the crucial subsea flow lines to the platform, after adjustments were made to the dynamic positioning system of the "Acergy Discovery". The delay in diving operations did not affect the production schedule of the $960-million project. First gas was originally anticipated by the end of 2011, but Single Buoy Moorings Inc., the owner of the platform, did not rule out it could be the middle of 2012 before production begins due to the need for more work on the platform. When the "Acergy Discovery" had run into one of the legs of the platform, the contact caused visible paint scrapes to the platform. It was described as a minor incident, but the vessel returned to Mulgrave so investigators could do their work.
