Tanker saved 16 survivors of shipwreck

Mon Aug 26 12:33:16 CEST 2013 Timsen

The "Stena Sunrise" saved 13 Chinese and three Myanmarese crew members of the f/v "Halo" from a life raft after four days adrift in the Caribbean sea. Their ship sank after a fire engulfed its engine room. The sailors with two flares left to go fired These in quick succession in the night of Aug 21, 2013. Two nautical miles away the captain of the tanker saw a faint light as he stood on the bridge. A second red flare confirmed that it was a distress signal. The tanker was about 150 nautical miles from Trinidad and Tobago on ist way to China. The captain decided to alter the ship's path and get closer to the source. The captain manoeuvred the ship within 20 metres of the rubber raft. They sent a heaving line with which the raft was pulled alongside and a ladder was lowered once the captain got permission from Trinidad and Tobago Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. The operation was over in 90 minutes. The tanker crew helped transfer them to another fishing vessel, the "Shinshu Maru 62" which was sent by the Trinidad authorities. Their raft, found to be in good condition, was lowered too.
