Royal Arsenal crew still detained in Iraq one year after fatal collision
One year has passed since the fatal collision of the Handymax bulk carrier 'Royal Arsenal' with the diving support vessel 'Al Misbar', and her crew remain under detention at Umm Qasr, Iraq. In August 2017, the Royal Arsenal collided the Al Misbar, owned and operated by the General Company Ports of Iraq (GCPI), which was transferring port employees from an offshore oil terminal at that time. The Al Misbar overturned and 21 people died as a result. After the accident, the Royal Arsenal returned to Umm Qasr port in order to be investigated, where she has been stuck onboard since that time along with 22 crew members. Source: SAFETY4SEA
20 Iraqi soldiers recovered
The bodies of 20 Iraqi sailors have been recovered from the "Al Misbar". Eight sailors were rescued and the bodies of four others found soon after the sinking. 16 more bodies were found when the ship was raised on Aug 24. The “Royal Arsenal” (IMO-No.: 9186766), impounded following the collision, which took place in the Khor Abdullah maritime canal between Iraq and Kuwait. 16 More Bodies Recovered from Sunken Iraqi Ship
Rescuers have recovered the bodies of 16 more sailors from an Iraqi ship that sank at the weekend in the country's territorial waters, bringing the death toll to 20, a transportation ministry statement said on Thursday. The Al-Misbar, a diving support ship owned by Iraq's ports authority, sank on Saturday after a collision with another vessel.
