The bodies of four Russian sailors who were killed in the "Alexandra" wreck off South Korea’s coast, have been brought to Vladivostok and Khabarovsk. Their funerals will be held on Feb 22. Two of the victims are from Nakhodka, two others from Khabarovsk. The crew comprised 12 Russian sailors. The vessel on January 9 left Nakhodka port with a freight of timber bound for Japan, from where the ship headed for its last voyage to China for scrapping when it sank on Feb 9 16 miles off Ulsan after it collided with a South Korean container ship with a capacity of 88,000 tonnes. The "Alexandra" broke into two parts, its stern part with cabins sank immediately at a depth of 140 metres. The ship’s forebody was afloat until February 13 and on the same day sank at a depth of 92 metres. Four crewmembers were killed and seven went missing. The Coast Guard of the Republic of Korea conducted a search operation for them until February 19, but failed to find anybody. The search involved 5 planes and helicopters and 15 ships.

The sole survivor of the "Alexander" sinking was released from hospital. The empty cargo ship was sunk on the way from the Japanese port of Toyamashinko to China on its last voyage before getting scrapped. According to his testimony, there was a powerful blow and water gushed into the rooms and compartments of the vessel. The man managed to swim out and get to one of the liferafts that opened automatically. He had seen the silhouette of a large ship quickly moving away in the darkness. The Khabarovsk-based company Rowley Group Limited had leased the vessel which was owned by the JSC Amur Shipping Company.

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries expressed regret Feb 10 over the sinking of a Cambodian-flagged freighter that left four Russian sailors dead and seven missing. A Hyundai-built container ship collided with the freighter Feb 9 2011 while it was undergoing tests off the shipyard in the southeastern port of Ulsan. "The cause of the accident is being investigated by authorities, but we first of all express sincere regret at human losses," Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world's largest shipbuilder, said in a statement. The 1,500-ton Alexandra with 12 Russian crew on board was torn apart and sank off Ulsan. Coastguard ships rescued one crew member and recovered four bodies. Yonhap news agency said the South Korean captain of the 88,000-ton container ship was held by coastguard officials for questioning.
