Tug reattached to barge
The "Sinuk" on Sep 21, 2011, has managed to reattach a tow line to the loose barge carrying tens of thousands of gallons of fuel off Alaska's west coast. The ship was able to hook up to the barge when winds dropped to 27 mph in the afternoon and conncet to the rear of it. The tug was towing the 173-foot barge toward its original destination Port Clarence near Nome. There was no reported damage to the barge. The tug had shadowed the barge overnight after it got loose on Sep 20evening in 15-foot waves and winds that reached 46 mph. USCG Kodiak, Alaska, September 21, 2011. The Coast Guard is monitoring a 173-foot barge adrift 11 miles north of Wales in the Bering Strait Sep 21 2011. Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders were contacted by the crew of the 82-foot Crowley tug Sinuk at 6:23 p.m. Sep 20. The Sinuk crew reported that while towing the barge the line attached to it broke free in heavy weather. The barge is expected to pass within eight miles west of Fairway Rock. Fairway Rock is located about 17 miles west of Wales and 216 miles northwest of Nome. It is reported the barge is carrying about 140,000 (530 mt) gallons of fuel.
