Five Nigerians sneak into ship’s rudder en route to Argentina

Sun Aug 07 10:49:08 CEST 2011 arnekiel

For a gang of five Nigerians from Kwara, Anambra, Enugu, Delta and Adamawa states, this line of thought may be adequate in explaining their mission on the night of Friday, July 22. Except that it omits one more vital and final part: “I travel anyhow; by all means!” For this daring gang, travelling “anyhow; by all means”, involves stealing into Argentine-bound vessel, MV New Glory. They hid in the compartment directly above the rudder head, which connects the vessel’s blowerroom. But, somehow, Mr. Kagogiannis Georgios, the Greek captain of the vessel, felt all was not well with his sail. There were unauthorised persons on board, he suspected. Then, he signalled officials at the radio room of the Regional Maritime Rescue Cordination Centre of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Kirikiri in Lagos. A drama opened – right in the high sea. Jolted by the distress call, the NIMASA recue personnel joined forces with the Maritime Guard Command and deployed the agency’s Global Maritime Distress Safety System and the Long Range Identification Tracking System. The facilities located MV New Glory about four miles south of Lagos Fairway Buoy. They climed onto the vessel, which was supposed to have only 23 Philipino crew members on board. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/icon/2011/aug/07/icon-07-08-2011-002.html
