Trawler on fire off Dieppe

Sun Mar 25 17:50:43 CEST 2018 Timsen

On March 24, 2018, around 5.30 p.m. the Maritime Prefecture of the English Channel and the North Sea was alerted by the CROSS Gris-Nez that the "Camaléa" was on fire 22 nautical miles north-east of Dieppe, The crew of four quickly evacuated the ship aboard a life raft. The CROSS immediately engages a Dragon 76 helicopter of civil security and the all-weather boat "Notre Dame de Bon Secours" of the SNSM of Dieppe. The fishing vessel "Majesty", which was located nearby, picked up the four crew members and headed to Dieppe. One of the sailors was slightly injured. Upon arrival at the port at 8.30 p.m. the crew was taken care of by a fire engine and then transferred to the hospital in Dieppe. At the same time, the Gris-Nez CROSS sent the patrol boat "Thémis" to the trawler in an attempt to extinguish the fire, with the support of the Dieppe SNSM's all-weather boat. The fishing vessel "Scaramouche" remained in the area to monitor the fire. After two hours, the Thémis managed to extinguish part of the fire but the engine room was still on fire. The CROSS now sent the emergency tug "Languedoc" to attempt a complete extinction of the fire aboard the "Camaléa". After a battle during the whole night, on March 25 at 10.30 a.m. the fire was out and the vessel taken in tow, but due to its bad condition it finally sank about 20 miles from Dieppe. No pollution was reported.
